PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. The development of PTSD sparks from how trauma is processed, or often how it fails to get processed. As the brains fear response becomes active, its ability to distinguish past from present is reduced, which can make the person feel like they are re-living the experience. Common traumatic events include:
Combat
Sexual assault
Serious accidents
Natural disasters
Violent attacks
Death or threatened death
Sexual violence
Symptoms may include:
Flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts
Avoiding the trauma, avoiding people, places, or things involving the trauma
Fear, guilt, or shame regarding the trauma
Trauma focused therapy sessions are the most effective in treating PTSD. Prolonged exposure during therapy confronts the trauma in a safe space until the event loses its power over your brain. Medication can help reduce symptoms, but are generally less effective than therapy. Recovery is possible.
